War Theater

The theatres and music halls of London continued to thrive during the First World War, offering light relief from the harsh realities of a nation tied into military conflict. Amongst the sketches and revues of the time were variety performances, involving popular songs and humourous takes on contemporray culture.

Patriotism filtered into the plays with many theatres putting on shows depicting the war effort and parodying Germanic traits.

To the soldiers home from the front, the spectacle of actors and actressess turning the war into a stage farce must have hightened their sense of dissociation with the society around them.

If you would like to learn more about this period of history and the impact that it had on societal reaction to drug use, the Museem can highly recommend the book featured to the left.

Siegfried Loraine Sassoon, CBE, MC (1886 – 1967)

BLIGHTERS

The House is crammed: tier beyond tier they grin
And cackle at the Show, while prancing ranks
Of harlots shrill the chorus, drunk with din;
‘We’re sure the Kaiser loves our dear old Tanks!’

I’d like to see a Tank come down the stalls,
Lurching to rag-time tunes, or ‘Home, sweet Home’,
And there’d be no more jokes in Music-halls
To mock the riddled corpses round Bapaume.
