Opium Postcard, Early 20th Century
item6

Opium Postcard

Little is know about this postcard although it is likely to have appeared in America during the earlier part of the 20th Century. The suggestion is that the gentleman smoking the opium pipe is likely to have been from the business classes, a banker or a clerk perhaps. Through his use of opium he has developed an inflated sense of self worth in a monetary sense. Opium was well known at this time for its ability to form dreamlike visions whilst enveloping its user in a feeling of ease and contendeness.

Clearly part of a series, it would be interesting to know what other postcards formed the set.
