Newsweek June 27 1966 - Police On The Spot

Turned On, Turned Off: As the burgeoning beatnik movement gave way to the hippie counterculture in the mid to late Sixties, Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert gave voice to those who had experienced the effects of Lysergic Acid Diethylamide, LSD. Proponenets of the drug advocated its use as a cure for alcoholism alongside alternative calls for its use as a conduit for astral projection.
